How to get spilled milk smell out of car carpet after it dries?
Someone spilled a full carton of milk on the rear floor carpet of my car. I scrubbed it with dish soap, but now that the car sat in the hot sun, the sour smell inside is unbearable. What detailing process removes deep carpet milk odor?

Dish soap won't work here because it only cleans the surface. A full carton of milk doesn't just sit on the carpet—it soaks straight through into the thick foam padding underneath the floor. The sun baked it, and bacteria are now feeding on the milk proteins. That is what causes the severe sour smell.
You need a liquid enzyme cleaner (like the heavy-duty ones used for pet urine). Don't just spray the top. You have to pour it heavily so it soaks down exactly as deep as the milk did. Cover the wet spot flat with a plastic bag so it doesn't evaporate, leave it for 24 hours to let the enzymes eat the bacteria, and then suck it all out with a shop-vac.
Honestly though, with a full carton, liquid cleaners sometimes still can't reach the bottom.
If the smell comes back in the heat, pop off the plastic trim by the door and pull the carpet back. If the foam padding underneath is saturated, take a utility knife, cut that smelly square of padding out, and throw it away. Clean the bare metal floor, and slide a new piece of scrap padding in its place. It’s cheap, way faster, and guarantees the source of the smell is physically gone.
