For a 1-meter wall retaining a garden bed, continuous irrigation is the primary source of hydrostatic pressure. Wet soil is significantly heavier than dry soil, and fine sand in the region can quickly clog drainage voids if the layers are not separated correctly.


1. Wall Preparation and Weep Holes

  • Weep hole sizing and location: Place 50 mm (2-inch) UPVC pipes through the lowest course of concrete blocks, just above the outer finished ground level. Space them every 1.5 to 2 meters along the wall length.

  • Downward angle: Tilt the PVC sleeves slightly toward the exterior so gravity pulls water outward rather than letting it sit in the block core.

  • Backside waterproofing: Coat the retaining face of the blockwork with bituminous waterproofing primer or liquid membrane. This prevents moisture from seeping through the block structure and causing efflorescence or paint peeling on the exposed side.

  • Inlet protection: Fit stainless steel wire mesh or durable plastic mesh over the back opening of each weep hole to stop gravel and insects from clogging the passage.


2. Geotextile Fabric Placement

  • Fabric selection: Use a non-woven geotextile needle-punched filter fabric (around 120 to 150 GSM). Do not use woven plastic weed barriers, as their weave tightens with fine silt and blocks water flow over time.

  • Trench lining: Unroll the fabric across the excavated soil trench behind the wall footing, running it up the rear earth cut. Leave enough excess material folded over the top edges to wrap the gravel completely later on.


3. Installing the Perforated Pipe

  • Pipe specification: Use a 100 mm (4-inch) slotted PVC or corrugated agricultural drain pipe.

  • Base gravel layer: Lay a 5 cm bedding of clean 20 mm washed gravel directly over the fabric at the base of the trench before placing the pipe.

  • Hole orientation: Position the perforations facing downward (at the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions). Downward-facing slots allow rising water to enter from below and evacuate immediately before head pressure builds against the wall.

  • Fall/Slope: Maintain a minimum 1% gradient (1 cm drop per 1 meter of run) directed toward a daylight discharge point or tied into the weep sleeves with tee fittings.


4. Gravel Backfill Column

  • Clean aggregate: Backfill around and over the pipe using 15 mm to 20 mm clean, washed stone. Avoid road base, gatch, or unwashed gravel containing quarry dust, as fines will consolidate and trap water.

  • Column thickness: Maintain a gravel drainage zone at least 20 to 30 cm thick directly against the block wall, raising it to within 15 to 20 cm of the final top soil grade.


5. Enclosing the Filter Envelope

  • Overlap the fabric: Pull the spare fabric from the back trench wall over the top of the gravel column, overlapping it tightly against the blockwork.

  • Surface layer: Place your garden soil mix directly over the folded fabric. The fabric barrier allows water to drain freely while permanently stopping soil fines and root mass from migrating down into the gravel bed.


Structural Reinforcement Note

  • A 1-meter soil load exerts considerable lateral pressure. Set the wall on a reinforced concrete strip footing (at least 40 cm wide by 15–20 cm deep).

  • Insert vertical steel rebar (T10 or T12) into the footing every 60 to 80 cm, running through the block hollows, and fill those specific block cavities completely with concrete grout.
